Depression or any type of disorder is nothing to be ashamed of. Sometimes these feelings come from within us, other times people put it in on us. Unfortunately the stigma that surrounds these issues is often looked down on. Anyone with any type of disorder should not be ashamed of it and what comes with it. Disorders are an illness, and not something to be ashamed of. Sometimes I will hear “You just like acting like this, don’t you?”. Contrary to popular belief, I do not. Like I said before, depression is an illness, not a lifestyle choice.
It is not our fault. It affects not only you but people from all types of backgrounds. To tell someone they need to try harder when they act a certain way, is not necessary. I try my hardest every day to act normal, some days are just harder than others. I shouldn’t feel this way just because I am not fully recovered yet. My best is more than enough.
Have compassion for yourself and the others around you. Why do we talk to ourselves in a way we would never speak to a friend? If one of my friends told me about some intriguing thoughts they were having, I would be kind to them. So why are we so hard on ourselves?
Getting help is not a sign of weakness. I think reaching out for help is a sign of being incredibly strong. I was always ashamed of myself for having been to therapy in the past, that only made me feel worse about myself around my “normal peers” Asking for help is not as difficult as you would think. Needing medication, therapy, or other sorts of treatment is nothing to hide. I am who I am now and I’m not afraid to show it. These types of treatments are the reason I am still alive today and I am so grateful for it.
Have compassion for yourself, you are only given one life.
